Five days after the powerful storm pummelled into Jamaica's western region with unprecedented strength, people in damaged neighborhoods along the coast are still desperately waiting for relief.
Numerous thoroughfares are clogged with rubble and people are isolated with little food, lacking utilities, and no idea of when normalcy will return.
The government said on Saturday that a minimum of 28 persons in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a devastating Category 5 hurricane with nearly 300 km/h wind speeds.
This represents almost a 50% increase in the fatalities within a day, and the number could rise as workers advance into previously inaccessible areas in the next few days.
Westmoreland parish is estimated to experience the second highest number of unconfirmed deaths, following St Elizabeth to the southeastern area. The cyclone's core hit somewhere between the two neighbouring parishes. In St Elizabeth an estimated 90% of homes have been destroyed.
'The future remains uncertain', characterized the situation as ''absolute ruin'.
A considerable highway traveling westward toward Westmoreland Parish meanders through a cemetery of vegetation – piles of tree parts, shattered and bent, spreading across the countryside.
Heaps of wreckage are piled along the region's highways, next to battered buildings, containers knocked over and local inhabitants moving through the ruins.
Local inhabitants in this coastal town, a seaside community and business center on the perimeter of Westmoreland, say the delay in receiving help is increasingly difficult.
One resident said he has been told assistance would arrive, but "the help hasn't materialized"
He sat in the shade on a makeshift stool in front of a edifice hardly upright – completely missing its roof – unclear regarding subsequent actions.
Roughly four hundred thousand residents in Jamaica were lacking electricity recently , and countless others have lost telephone and internet connectivity, cut off from the outside world.
The transportation minister announced that numerous connectivity tools have been installed nationwide to assist with online connectivity.
Officials responded to concerns the authorities have faced for its handling, saying there were "several factors" causing slowdowns.
"Refuelling, Areas for Landing, Accessibility and Timing/Visibility," authorities clarified.
The Prime Minister urged that the "immediate focus is on removing wreckage, repairing critical infrastructure", as well as offering sustenance and treatment resources.
Within a small settlement just outside of Whitehouse, Robert Morris supported himself on fractured building material. Behind him, the community he's always lived in throughout his existence has been destroyed, along with his livelihood.
"We all devastated here, man," he expressed. He said the boat house was destroyed and is now "leveled"
"The hurricane destroyed everything," he explained, incorporating his vessel, which he describes as "mashed up"
Residents of these regions are marked by self-respect and perseverance, phrases commonly used on regional transmissions and apparent through hopeful perspectives in the most difficult circumstances.
Seated under the facade of a severely compromised structure, a local man said he has lost everything, but "we must maintain belief and positive outlook continues"
"Can't give up. Not gonna give up," he said.
This reflects identical sentiment demonstrated by a local farmer, sitting in the bed of his truck offering remaining produce – the last of his produce that was saved from destruction.
Regarding his agricultural land, he said: "It's all wrecked. Complete demolition happened" But he promptly continued: "We must express gratitude for survival"
Meanwhile, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.
American authorities declared that its Disaster Assistance Response Team had made entry. And countries including the UK have also committed substantial financial assistance and emergency supplies.
