When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
