Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Oil Supplies to India in Snub of Washington Sanctions

During a unambiguous signal to the United States, President Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “uninterrupted” deliveries of energy resources to India. The announcement came as the two leaders met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Signal Directed at the Western Countries

The statement, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be targeted at the United States and its allies, who have sought to compel New Delhi into scaling back its historical ties with Moscow. The context comes after earlier American measures, including additional tariffs targeting New Delhi due to its purchase of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy exporter of oil and gas and all required for the advancement of India’s economy,” he stated. “We are ready to continue securing the steady flow of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Modi, without referencing crude directly, echoed the theme by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a key and vital foundation of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”

Challenging US Interference

Prior to the meeting, in a media interview, Putin had challenged American pressure regarding India's energy purchases. He argued, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, then why can't India enjoy the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival marked his initial trip to India after the onset of the war in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a deliberate attempt to display that the personal rapport between the men was undisturbed.

A Warm Welcome

Employing an unusual move, Modi personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. The two shared a warm hug akin to old friends before enjoying a private dinner together.

Modi later described India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “founded on shared respect and strong faith.”

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

The bilateral summit yielded several key agreements across military and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the completion of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which sets a goal to double bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the end of the decade.

The leaders also agreed to reshape their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's biggest source of arms, this role has diminished lately as India aims to widen its sources.

Their communique emphasized cooperation in the co-development of advanced military systems, though specific mention of systems like the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

Ultimately, Moscow and Delhi reiterated that in the “present intricate, tense, and unpredictable global landscape, their relationship remain strong to external pressure.”
