Sir Humphrey Burton, a monumental figure in arts broadcasting, has passed away at the age of 94.

He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

In the 1960s and 70s, he was the BBC's head of music and arts and won accolades for seminal programmes like The Golden Ring.

He also launched the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that uncovered talents such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
