The US government has lashed out at the administration in Caracas over the fatality of a imprisoned political dissident, calling it a "stark reminder of the despicable essence" of President Nicolás Maduro's rule.
The political prisoner died in his prison cell at the El Helicoide detention center in Caracas, where he had been held for over a year, according to rights groups and dissident factions.
The Caracas administration reported that the former governor showed signs of a myocardial infarction and was transferred to a medical facility, where he passed away on the weekend.
This recent intervention from the United States is part of an intensifying diplomatic spat between the Trump administration and President Maduro, who has claimed the US of pursuing his overthrow.
In recent months, the United States has boosted its military presence in the Latin America and has executed a number of deadly attacks on vessels it asserts have been used for moving narcotics.
US President Donald Trump has alleged Maduro personally of being the chief of one of the region's cartels—an allegation the Venezuelan president strongly rejects—and has threatened the use of force "by land".
"He had been 'held without cause' in a 'torture centre'," said the American diplomatic office for the region.
DÃaz was arrested in that year after joining many political opponents to contest the outcome of that period's national vote.
Venezuela's state-run national electoral body proclaimed Maduro the victor, despite figures from dissidents indicating their contender had triumphed by a wide margin.
The elections were largely criticized on the world stage as lacking in credibility, and ignited unrest throughout the nation.
DÃaz, who led the Nueva Esparta state, was indicted of "incitement to hatred" and "terrorist acts" for disputing Maduro's declaration of success.
National rights organization Foro Penal has expressed alarm over worsening situations for detained dissidents in the Latin American nation.
"Another jailed opponent has passed away in Venezuelan prisons. He had been imprisoned for a year, in segregation," stated Alfredo Romero, the group's director, on a social media platform.
He said that the detainee had only been granted one visit from his child during the full duration of his incarceration. He further stated that seventeen detained dissidents have died in the nation since that year.
Opposition groups have also criticized the regime over the passing of the former governor.
MarÃa Corina Machado, a prominent dissident figure who won this period's Nobel Peace Prize but who stays in concealment to evade detention, said that DÃaz's death was not an isolated incident.
"Unfortunately, it adds to an disturbing and heartbreaking series of demises of jailed opponents detained in the aftermath of the post-election crackdown," she wrote.
The Democratic Unitary Platform declared that DÃaz "died unjustly".
DÃaz's own faction, Democratic Action (AD), also remembered the ex-leader, saying he had been wrongly imprisoned without fair treatment and had been kept in conditions "that should never have violated his human rights".
Frictions between the US and Venezuela have become ever more tense over what Trump has described as efforts to curb the movement of narcotics and migrants into the United States.
Maduro has conversely alleged the US of using its war on drugs as an justification to overthrow his socialist government and get its hands on Venezuela's huge oil reserves.
The America has also deployed a large fleet—its biggest presence in the region in decades—along with thousands of military personnel.
In a related action, the Venezuelan military according to reports swore in thousands of troops in one go on the weekend, in answer to what military leaders described as US "threats".
