The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, did not confirm this decision promptly following his victory in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
In his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a famous family.
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
