Citizens have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The assault led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A prominent representative involved in the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everybody home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the hostages.
At the area of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk falls, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
