Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
