Harsh Winter Weather Systems Claim Five Lives in Gaza Amid Desperate Conditions in Temporary Shelters.

Powerful winter winds caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents sheltering people displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing at least four individuals. This tragedy underscores the perilous living conditions that persist after over two years of devastating bombardment and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers No Relief from Severe Weather

Although a truce has been in effect since last fall, humanitarian organizations report that residents do not have the sufficient shelter necessary to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, said on Tuesday that the dead include two women, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia during the night.

"The world has enabled us to experience death in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 people of a one family — 72-year-old a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and hygiene items across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population reside in makeshift tents since their houses were turned into rubble during the war. Humanitarian organizations contend an insufficient amount of shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the truce.

Fatality Numbers Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, reports more than four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals since the truce began. The ministry maintains detailed fatality records that are seen as largely accurate by UN agencies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, stated on that day that no fewer than 100 minors below eighteen years old – 60 males and forty girls – had been killed since the ceasefire began due to armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he explained, reflected incidents where sufficient information had been gathered to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "So what the international community now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over two million people has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while facing lack of assistance and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is badly needed during the winter months. This marks the third winter since the conflict between the state and Hamas started on 7 October 2023, when militants stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority says more than seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
