A decade ago, Barry competed at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from athlete to trainer started through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.
Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he built a name for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the top as he describes it.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a structured plan so we can for optimal success.”
Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and rejects terms like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and innovate. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”
He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.
“The manager and I agree that the style of play ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the flexibility, the physicality, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.
“To make it light, we have to give them a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data currently. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”
Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he had concerns about the presentation, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. So, to build his skill set, he entered tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He completed the course as the best in his year, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.
Lampard’s successor with the club was Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to work together again. The FA consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
