The mayor of the town of Black River – an area referred to as “the epicenter” for the devastating storm – has shared the monstrous storm surges and widespread devastation caused by the catastrophe.
Reflecting on the harrowing experience, the mayor recalled enduring the intense storm at an emergency response center.
“Our community of this area is devastated,” he stated. “The destruction is so severe that the prime minister designated this area as the worst-hit zone.”
Five individuals from the town are confirmed to have died, but the mayor noted receiving word of additional fatalities that remain unconfirmed due to connectivity and transportation challenges.
“The hurricane came around 8 a.m. and continued for around several hours, during which we were battered with strong gusts and torrential rainfall,” he added.
“We experienced up to 4.8 metres of water at the response center. That was a frightening moment for us, and we were hoping that it would not increase any further, because we were on the upper level, and frankly, when we saw the water climbing, it was a terrifying moment for us.”
Solomon stated that Black River, located in the severely affected southwest parish of St Elizabeth, is without water and electricity, and the majority of structures have lost their roofing. One official previously described the town as flooded, with more than 500,000 inhabitants lacking electricity. A mudslide has obstructed the main roads of a nearby area, where roadways have been reduced to mud pits. Locals are now removing water from their homes and trying to salvage their belongings.
Search and rescue operations and damage assessments have become extremely difficult because every one of the town’s transport and critical services such as fire, police, medical centers and supermarkets were “immensely damaged,” notes Solomon.
He is now concentrating on working to assist the most vulnerable, while also dealing with the personal impact of the disaster.
“The mayor's car was totally covered by water. The roofing was lost, so I fully grasp the pain that persons are feeling, but what is a priority for me now is to concentrate on getting aid relief for the most at-risk at this point,” he explains.
Solomon believes that it will take millions of local currency to rebuild the community after Melissa’s destruction. At present, he states, the main goal is removing debris from impassable roads, which have isolated the town.
“Efforts are underway to get the major thoroughfares and secondary routes here so that we can deliver aid in. Most of our stores, if not all, were impacted negatively so they will be unable to offer goods to individuals who are in need at this time,” he says.
The prime minister has seen the devastation first-hand, with an aerial tour of the region revealing 80 to 90% of roofs in the area had been lost.
“It is going to be a massive undertaking to restore this historic town. But although it is destroyed, we can envision a tomorrow of it emerging stronger and better,” he informed reporters.
“It will be accomplished. So maintain the positive outlook, remain hopeful, and we will get through this, and we will rebuild better,” he affirmed.
