Cameroon Political Opposition Leader Confronts Legal Proceedings Over Electoral Turmoil, Authorities Says

Political Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage that Paul Biya has secured an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over accusations that he provoked "aggressive election protests".

At least 4 demonstrators have been fatally wounded during skirmishes between security forces and protesters since the presidential election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth term in office.

Tchiroma Bakary insists that he emerged victorious, a statement rejected by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on demonstrators have worried the international community, with the United Nations, AU and European Union urging restraint.

Official's Accusations

Recently, Nji alleged the opposition figure of coordinating what he referred to as "unlawful" rallies leading to the deaths, and also condemned him for announcing success in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "accomplices involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, won the October 12 vote with over half of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Challenger's Position

Issa Tchiroma is yet to respond to the official announcement to bring him to court, but he had before stated that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being detained.

Following the vote count, he said that security forces shot on demonstrators present near his residence in Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 people.

Investigation Launched

Earlier this week, the interior minister disclosed that an inquiry would be initiated into clashes surrounding the declaration of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the individuals involved lost their lives," he commented, without providing a precise figure of protesters who have been killed in the clashes.

The minister added that several personnel of the law enforcement also received serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

Although the interior minister asserted the condition throughout Cameroon was now stable, demonstrators remain active in various areas of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where protesters established barricades on Tuesday, and ignited tyres on the streets.

Experts caution that the post-electoral violence could lead the nation into a political crisis.
