Wilfried Nancy stated he did not fear losing his job, maintaining, “I believe we are very near to a turnaround,” in the wake of sliding worryingly close to the chopping block with a heavy defeat by the Ibrox side.
The Hoops were in front Rangers at the interval but a collapse after the break let Danny Röhl’s team to move level on points with the current Scottish Premiership champions. Nancy, who was hired in December, has now presided over six defeats in eight games.
“There is unity at the club,” insisted the manager.
Questioned about whether he was concerned, the 48-year-old said: “That’s not my focus. My focus is on finding ways to help my team to improve on details.
Hundreds of supporters made their feelings clear – towards the hierarchy – in their hundreds outside the stadium. Club directors would be most likely to bring back the former boss, who enjoyed a successful temporary stint last year, if the Frenchman were sacked.
“The outcomes [that leads to pressure]. So this is the reality for the moment. But when I say this is the reality, I am not saying that I am a defeatist guy. Absolutely not. My point is we are really close, imminently close to reverse our form.”
Nancy remains focused on the fact Celtic show good levels for one half at a time. In fact, if not for poor finishing they might have been better than 1-0 up. “There were positives aside from the fact that we haven’t scored a second goal,” he said. “I know that we lost, but it's important to stay balanced.
“The level we had at certain moments was exceptionally high. This is the reality. And I would not speak so positively if it was different. That is the reason, when it comes to wins, I mentioned we've seen this before. Which is why I said that a change is coming to a shift in fortunes. Currently: details, details, details.”
“I saw a lot of encouraging signs that we did, once more. However it’s about consistency. My narrative would be different if it was not the case. That’s why I am convinced we’re going to be able to fix this.”
Danny Röhl refused to contemplate a championship push even after what seemed like a landmark win. “Step by step, then we can gradually build a challenge,” he said. “The belief in the squad is excellent.”
